Once hatched, these balls of empty egg capsules often wash up on shore. The common whelk is carnivorous and feeds on worms and other molluscs, often using the edge of its own shell to prize open other shells. It also scavenges for carrion, which it finds by smell. The eggs of the gloriously named nobbed whelk (Busycon carica) number between 1 and 99 in each capsule. As the female produces between 40 and 160 capsules this can mean a substantial amount of new nobbed whelks, should they all successfully hatch.
