The term 'Danxia landform' was originally defined by Chinese geologists [1] and refers to erosional landscapes developed on 13 Feb 2019 Danxiashan in southern China. The Danxia landform is a unique type of “petrographic geomorphology” found in China, characterized by strips of red sedimentary rock in steep cliffs. The rocks forming Danxia landscape are all reddish sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic period, about 2 million years ago, which have formed peaks and colored rocks through weathering and crustal movement. Zhangye Danxia landform is one of the most representative Danxia Landforms in China. The Danxia national park is located close to the city of Zhangye — about 30 minutes west by car, in northwestern China’s Gansu Province. There are sightseeing cars available within the national park, where other tourist buses are not allowed to go. Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park is a geologically significant area consisting of large formations of distinctly rainbow coloured rock. Due to the unique rock formations,this is also considered as the ‘ World Famous UNESCO Geopark of China’.
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park is in the eastern foothills of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu Province, China. The geological park has a spectacular Danxia (/dan-sshyaa/ 'red cloud') landform area that covers about 50 square kilometers (19 square miles).
