Jazz improvisation is about making choices in the moment, from things you already know how to play really, really well. This really makes students stop and re-think their ideas about improvisation. How can something be ‘improvisation’ if it consists of familiar materials?
But jazz improvisation is not about scales. Jazz is about learning a language (more on that soon). Don’t worry so much about which scale to play over this chord or that chord. Myth #3: You need to know a lot of music theory. I think this one is way over exaggerated. Sure, knowing music theory helps.
